The inauguration of “Crafted by Kourtzís”, a temporary pottery exhibition organised by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) at the Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos, is being held on Thursday 5th July (at 7:30pm). Curated with the knowledgeable contribution of the Study Centre for Contemporary Ceramics, the exhibition highlights aspects of the long history in pottery of the Kourtzís family, from 1820 through to the present. This voyage through time showcases elements of local history, practices and customs, and techniques relating directly to the course followed by the potter’s craft both on the island of Lesvos and in the wider region.
The exhibition presents over a hundred characteristic ceramic pieces made by the Kourtzís family, from the mid-19th century to the present. The objects bear witness to the long succession of six generations, but also to the pottery workshops that came into existence and evolved over time. Audiovisual material and authentic photographs, books and archives flank the exhibition.
Held in the museum’s battès , the small storage rooms where the olives were kept until their processing, imparting authenticity and originality to the exhibition narrative by preserving the charm of a space that has lived.
The objects on display belong mainly to members of the Kourtzís family, as well as to the private collections of Pétros Vérgos, Níki Eleftheriádi, Dínos Kóyias and the Folklore Museum of the “Anáptyxi” Cultural and Reading Centre of Ayiássos.
The exhibition’s photographic material has been kindly loaned from the archives of the Kourtzís family and the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery.
The exhibition runs from: the 6th July through to the 15th October 2018.
Opening hours: daily, except Tuesdays, 10am-6pm.
